2012-2013 Season

STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT -

Faith had two boys qualify for the state tournament. Josh Marquardt, as a freshman, entered his first state tournament with high hopes. He was paired with one of the top rated 106 wrestlers and struggled from the beginning to the end. He was pinned in the second period. Junior Seth VonRentzell also struggled in his first round with a high seeded wrestler. He was not pinned, but lost on points. In the second round, Josh again struggled and was pinned. Seth had an easier time in his second round taking on a wrestler he beat during the regular season. He was able to pin him and move on to the third round Friday night. He lost that round to end his first state tournament. Congratulations to both boys on qualifying for the State tournament. Only the best in the state make it to the state tournament.

REGIONALS - February 15 & 16

The regionals this year were at Eaton High School. The boys had a difficult time in their first round because they were matched with the top seeded boys in their weight class. Clark Kelly was the only person to win in triple overtime. In the next round two of the boys stood out and captured a trip to the State tournament. Freshman Josh Marquardt, who had his best showing at Sheridan the previous week, continued the momentum into this qualifier and was the fourth person in the 106 weight class to qualify for State. Junior Seth VonRentzell also continued the momentum from the previous week to place third and qualify in the 170 weight class. Both will have tough competition in their opening round at State since they are seeded low and will be matched with boys in a much higher seed.

Mac Hansen and Seth VonRentzel both placed second in their divisions with Clark Kelly and Chris Siebarth placing third by winning in the final round. Frankie Sturniolo placed 5th in his division with two wins. All the wrestlers showed substantial improvement heading into the Regionals the weekend of February 15th. The team placed fifth out of ten schools in only their second year of wrestling. Awesome job FCA wrestlers!

Dual with Valor

February 7, 2013, was a historic evening as Faith wrestlers hosted their first home dual against Valor. Unfortunately both teams were missing wrestlers in different divisions, leaving many forfeits. Clark Kelly and Trevor Olsen each won in their weight class, with Trevor scoring a convincing pin to the cheers of the home crowd. The wrestlers were excited to have such a great crowd at their first home event.

Ellicott High School Invitational Tournament

Faith wrestlers had their  best showing of the season in this tournament. They were just two points from receiving a trophy for third place out of ten schools. Many wrestlers placed in their weight divisions. The real stand out was freshman Trevor Olson who placed second in the varsity division for his weight class. He had two pins and lost the finals 9 to 1.  Junior Seth VonRentzel had a spectacular day going undefeated with a first place showing in his weight class. He had two pins and won the other two matches convincingly. Frankie Sturniolo, Clark Kelly, and Markus Jones all placed fifth in their weight classes.  All three had two pins to achieve the ribbons for their accomplishments. With regionals just three weeks away, the boys are peaking at the right time. This prepares them for 5A powerhouse  Valor for Faith’s first home wrestling dual on January 31st.

Lyons Tournament 1/19/13

The boys had a great day at this tournament. Clark Kelly won first place in his divison. Seth VonRentzel won third place. Chris Siebarth took fourth place and Josh Marquart took fifth place. For a large tournament, this was  one of the best showings for the boys this season. Frank Sturniolo remains out with a concussion but should be back the week of January 21st. This is a great preparation for the regionals that begin February 15th.

Stanley Lake Duals 12/8/12

The boys had the opportunity to wrestle 5 different schools giving them much needed mat time. Frankie Sturniolo had a break out day with two wins, two forfeits and one loss. Many of the other boys also had a good day including Clark Kelly, Seth VonRentzell and Trevor Olsen. Jacob Lodwig was able to get his first wins with a pin and a win on points. It was a good day for the boys to get much needed experience prior to next week’s matches at Holy Family and Lyons.

Middle Park Tournament 12/1/12

The wrestlers had their first major tournament on Saturday. One surprise standout was sophomore Max Hansen. He won two of his matches in convincing style with pins. The other wrestlers who won matches were Freshman Trevor Olsen, Juniors Chris Siebarth, Clark Kelly and Markus Jones. The team did a respectable job on the court with many very close matches.

Bennett Dual 11/28/12

The 2012/13 wrestling season began with the first dual against wrestling powerhouse Bennett High school. In the second year as a wrestling team, there are now 7 new wrestlers out of 12. It will take time for these new wrestlers to adjust to the stiff competition and techniques necessary to be successful. The team did show excellent progress with Chris Siebarth holding on to win his match. Many wrestlers appeared to be ahead of schedule in progressing as competitive wrestlers.
