FAITH CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
Science Olympiad Team Qualifies for State! The Faith Eagle has taken flight and the Science Olympiad team landed a 9th place against 28 teams overall at the State competitive level! There was intense competition at all levels, but Robyn Sinner and Alexis Miley made it look easy for Science Olympiad team as they placed 3rd in Forensics with Ari Kawakami and Melissa Tanaka grabbing a 4th place hold in Optics. Competition ranged from categories of “Mousetrap vehicles,” “Sumobot” to the always fascinating “Mission Possible.” Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team for their state qualification! Getting there was no easy soar. Regionals were tough, with 75 teams competing state-wide for a spot at the state level, but Sam Yaeger and Liam Noon made it look easy as they took 1st place in the Helicopter competition while Ricky Rostad and Zack Larson took 1st in the wind-powered competition. Ari Kawakami and Robin Sinner secured a strong 2nd place position in Experimental Design, securing placement in the top ten for Faith Christian Academy and a guaranteed state level position at Colorado School of Mines. Elementary Fun Day The Science Olympiad team planned, scheduled and implemented a science fun-day at the elementary school. The idea of the elementary fun day started in the 80’s and is organized to encourage continued interest in the sciences by kids of all ages. This program allows the high school students to be the teachers. For 4 hours, the Science Olympiad team guides the elementary students through various science based learning experiments. One of the most popular is “gross-ology” (or the skin-you’re- in program) where the kids are taught to make gross looking blisters and sores to demonstrate that science can be a fun, and even yucky, opportunity to learn! Ewwww so interesting!! Upcoming Events Science Olympiad participants will be going to Elitches May 12 to study motion and energy, and to try out some of the physics principles they have learned this year. It’s a fun way to put their learning in-to-motion! This fall Science Olympiad participants will focus on Rock-a-teering and Mission to Mars, a NASA based learning experience. You are not going to want to miss this arc of opportunity to sky -rock-et your learning. New for 2011/2012 are “rock samples” and the “robotic arm.” Volunteer Opportunities Are you a chemist? Do you love science? Do you have a desire to help? The Science Olympiad program is need of volunteers. If you are interested, or know a parent that is interested in volunteering to coach events – we could really use the support. Ideally, we would like 12-15 parents to help run events. Please contact Ms. Martha Williams if you can volunteer. Every parent’s support counts! Wish List Time for spring cleaning! We are seeking the following items;
Your support is greatly appreciated! If you have any of these items (or others that are similar), or if you happen to see these at a garage sale, the Science Olympiad program would sincerely appreciate your generous donations! Please contact Martha Williams or Chris Powers with donations! BIG, BIG THANKS! A big “Thank YOU” to all the parents who attended the events and to those who supported, coached, and even judged some of the events. It means so much to the kids to have you there to watch, support and celebrate the tremendous efforts and successes made by the kids. THANK YOU!!! As the writer & editor of this article, I represent many parents and students who want to personally thank Ms. Williams for her dedication to our children’s success through this program, and her unconditional support and passion for student success. Thank you Ms. Williams!
Science Olympiad is a science-oriented technology elective. Students learn experientially as they choose one or more events to compete in at the state and regional levels. These events encompass various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, and technology. Preparation typically requires study, research, building and testing that involves both class time and out of school time. The goal of Science Olympiad is to develop an understanding of the world and to learn problem solving and anaylitical reasoning skills applicable to all areas of life, from high school and beyond. It is the teachers' desire to instill a life-long love of science in the students that will enable them to rise to challenges, and overcome them as well.
HIGHLIGHTS
Our team finished 9th in State this past weekend at the School of Mines. Congratulations to medalists Robyn Sinner and Alexis Miley placing third in Forensics and to Melissa Tanaka and Eri Kawakami on thieir 4th place finish in Optics The Science Olympiad team is now preparing to host the Elementary Fun Day for all 4th and 5th graders on April 21st!
Meet the Science Olympiad Participants:
Cheyenne Mountain Invitational The Science Olympiad teams competed on Saturday, February 5th at the Cheyene Mountain Invitational Tournament. Medalist were Ben Rice and Zach Larson 3rd in Helicopters, Melissa Tanaka nad Eri Kawakami placed 3rd in Write it Do it, Dallas McCoy and Ben Rice finished 3rd in Towers, and Conner McCain and CJ Johnson were 3rd in Sumo Bots. Josh Tuinder and Evan ODorisio were 2nd in Sumo Bots, Melissa TAnaka and Eri Kawakami were 1st in Optics and in Remote Sensing, and Robyn Sinner and Ben Rice placed 1st in Sounds of Music.
The 5th graders were challenged in the event called Write It Do It. They had to write directions for a partner to build a mystery object. They also learned some kitchen chemistry and ways to identify white household substances in an event called Mystery Powders. They were also lucky enough to launch air powered 2Liter bottle rockets as they learned about pressure.
Thanks to all of the wonderful Science Olympiad students for providing such awesome instruction and to all the 4th and 5th grade teachers for allowing us to share our passion with the kids. It was a very FUN DAY!
