Faith Claims 3A State Baseball Title

Faith Christian High School claimed the 2011 State Baseball Title with a 10-8 victory over rival Holy Family.  This came on the heels of a 3-2 semifinal win on Friday over Hotchkiss.

In Saturday’s championship tilt, Faith spotted Holy Family a 5-0 second inning lead.  Then with two outs in the bottom of the frame, Junior Ben Rice blasted a two run home run over the Jackson Field left field fence.  Three batters later, third baseman Isaac Henry, singled in Nolan Beasley and Alex Buchmann making the score 5-4.

From here, the game see-sawed back and forth with each team scoring in every inning.  Finally, in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles took their first lead 8-7, on a single by sophomore Tyler Tucker.  After the Tigers tied the game again in the fifth at 8, Alex Buchmann singled in Beasley, and then scored on a screaming triple to right center by senior David Bote. This gave Faith a 10-8 lead, which would eventually be the final score.  Winning pitcher, Danny Graves, retired the Tigers harmlessly in the sixth and seventh, setting off a wild celebration on the infield.  Graves recorded his eighth win of the 2011 season by battling gamely throughout the contest.

With the victory, Faith Christian finished the campaign 24-2, and with their second title in school history.  First year coach, Danny Bote, added this championship to the one Faith won in 2007.  The Eagles will return eight starters for next year, losing only seniors David Bote and Dylan Tucker.  Bote was also named the 2011 State 3A Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Both games are scheduled for Jackson Field on the UNC campus in Greeley. Win or lose, Faith is also scheduled to play again on Monday.

His performance earned him his sixth victory of the season against no losses. Senior David Bote hurled the seventh inning, striking out three and walking two.

Faith jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Isaac Henry singled, David Bote walked, and after a double steal, Colby Smith delivered the first run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Bote later scored the second run on a throwing error by the Pirates catcher.

Faith Earns Number One Seed in State Tournament by Defeating Eaton 7-2!

Colby Smith

Faith Christian dominated Eaton in defeating the Reds for the first time since 2007, 7-2.  Faith finished the regular season with a 17-2 record and the Number 1 seed in the 2011 state tournament.  This on top of their 12-1 league record and Metro League Championship.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  Alex Buchmann led off the inning with an infield single.  Two outs later, Colby Smith lined an RBI double off the centerfield fence.  The Eagles were off and running, never to trail in the game.

The score was still 1-0, heading into the bottom of the fifth.  With one out, Trevor Wolf singled to left.  Ben Rice was hit by a pitch, and Steve Galambos singled to load the bases.  Alex Buchmann flew out to left for the second out of the inning.  Isaac Henry came through with a clutch double plating Wolf and Rice.  David Bote rifled a single up the middle scoring Galambos, and Henry scored the final run of the frame on the back end of a double steal.  When the dust had settled, Faith led 5-0.

Tyler Tucker finished the Eagle scoring with a two run blast over the right field fence scoring Danny Graves who had doubled one batter earlier.  Eaton scored twice in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late.

David Bote

Colby Smith delivered seven strong innings on the mound for Faith.  He surrendered two unearned runs on three hits while striking out 11 and walking only one.  Every player in the lineup got one hit for the Eagles, with Isaac Henry and Tyler Tucker each having two runs batted in.

Colby Smith, Isaac Henry, & Dylan Tucker

Colby Smith raised his record to 3-0, allowing only two runs on three hits. He also struck out seven Machebeuf hitters in fashioning a very efficient complete game.

3A baseball preview:
Bote brothers — coach and player — lead Faith Christian

By Paul Willis
Special to The Denver Post

Photo courtesy of the Denver Post

It definitely isn't an everyday arrangement, but early signs indicate it is going to work at Faith Christian.

The Eagles new baseball coach is Danny Bote, the older brother of Eagles shortstop/pitcher David Bote. While a father coaching a son on a varsity team is commonplace, this one is a bit different.

"It's a very unique situation," said Danny Bote, 29. "The biggest problem is figuring out what he's going to call me. I think we've settled on 'Coach.'"

If any family can pull it off, why not the Botes? Their father, Bob, was a legendary coach at Niwot before moving on to Erie (he is taking this spring off, but soon will resurface). Bob guided Niwot to three-straight Class 4A titles from 1998-2000 with Danny an infielder on all three squads.

Now, the brothers will take a crack at it in the 3A ranks. Danny inherits a strong team (21-4 last season) and won't have to worry about cries of nepotism if David plays every game. David, a senior, was the lone underclassmen on the 3A all-state team last year.

"It's been great; I love it," said David Bote, who hit .578 with six home runs and 34 RBI last season. "He's a great guy and a great coach. Some of the guys brought it up a little at first, but now that practice is starting they've seemed to forget about it."

Danny, a youth pastor, was somewhat surprised when he was offered an interview after returning from a family vacation over the summer. With longtime skipper Gino Carbajal now an assistant at Regis University, Danny was an ideal candidate as a former assistant under his father at Erie and in Florida at Manatee High.

Eagles Defeat the Cardinals 18-7 in their Season Opener
March 16, 2011

Colby Smith

The Eagles baseball team opened their season on the road with a decisive 18-7 win over 4A Elizabeth. Coach Bote's team overcame first game, first inning jitters, scoring 13 runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 6 to 3 deficit. This year's nine returns 8 starters from last year's final four team and with them high expectations of another run at a state title.

Senior David Bote pitched the first three innings to gain the win. Junior Colby Smith finished on the hill, allowing only one run in his three inning stint. Both pitchers greatly helped their causes, with Smith hitting a grand slam in the fourth inning, and Bote adding a three run blast to right in the first. Catcher Ben Rice went 3 for 3 at the plate and drove in three runs while scoring two. Tyler Tucker and Isaac Henry both had 3 hit games as well for Faith.

The 2011 Eagles featured in their opening game returning players David Bote, Colby Smith, Nolan Beasley, Danny Graves, Isaac Henry, Alex Buchmann, Trever Wolf, and Ben Rice, along with newcomers Dylan Tucker, Tyler Tucker and Steven Galambos.

The program has much depth this season with 28 players all told between Varsity and Junior Varsity.
