FAITH CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT The Faith Christian High School Art department is a great addition to its very strong, college-prep curriculum and has several elective classes available to students to enjoy throughout their four years of high school. Students receive instruction from Scott Hickel, a teacher who has 11 years of teaching experience and is an amazing artist himself, which allows for a great introduction into the world of artistic development. Art is a wonderful way for students to explore their imaginations using their unique gifts and talents and gives them a beautiful opportunity to glorify God using them. Learning how to be creative using a number of media is vital to artistic development and the students are encouraged to try each and every medium available to them. Graphite, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, oil and acrylic paints, and pottery are just a short list of the media the students will learn about and work with.
The following are descriptions of the art courses offered at FCA: Art I is a class where students will learn the fundamentals of art, beginning with drawing as a foundation for all other media. Students will experiment with various materials and study examples through art history. It is the hope that the students will gain an appreciation for art in this introductory class. Art II encourages students to pursue the media of their choice, while unique and refresher projects are assigned to provide a deeper understanding of art. This is a class where specializations of techniques are emphasized.
Advanced Art I and II are classes that require the students to submit a portfolio of at least eight works in a wide and diverse range of mediums with an evaluation of their strongest work. A paper or PowerPoint on art history, medium technique or an artistic style is also required. This is a 2-year program and is offered to only Juniors and Seniors. Pottery I explores the techniques of hand building, wheel throwing and a combination of both. Students will also experiment with and learn various glazing and staining techniques as well as kiln operations. Pottery II is a continuation of its prerequisite and furthers the techniques used in pottery. In this class, students are encouraged to explore individual forms to challenge their abilities and thinking as well as perform more difficult projects.
